Step back in time at this local history museum. Admission is free, however donations are appreciated. The charming, old Stone House Museum of Marine is itself an example of early stone masonry. Built in 1872 by Swedish stone mason, Gustav Carlson, it is constructed of local sandstone. It is recorded in the Library of Congress as “an outstanding example of the Swedish stone work of early Minnesota settlers.”
The building first served as the Marine Town Hall and jail. Scribbled messages of those jailed can still be seen on one wall. The Stone House Museum and its collection of unique historic items are owned by the City of Marine on St. Croix. From 1963 to 2023, the Marine Women’s Civic Club managed the collection. After its sunsetting, the newly formed Stewards of Marine Mills History took over and now maintains the structure with volunteers.
